HELLO CHURCH

A SHORT INTRODUCTION TO MY BLOG

When I sat down to begin this blog series I’m titling Why Worship, I pondered the tone it should have.

I quickly dismissed academic, because, well… I’m not that smart.

Serious? Boring. Sarcastic? Too mean. Authoritative, i.e., preachy? Ugh.

So I thought, Witty! Then I remembered I’m not very funny… or pithy, or clever, or really anything so charming.

So what’s left?

Apparently, just me. A guy named Mark, Hubert and Donna's son. Therefore, this blog’s personality will simply have to be my own, for whatever that’s worth. Sorry I can’t be more entertaining. Maybe I can be enlightening, even if it’s just a little.

And make no mistake, if this blog is worth anything, if it’s helpful at all, it is because our Lord graciously makes it so. If it’s not, ignore it and forgive me for straying out of my lane.

Now, you should be asking, who is this guy and why should I care what he thinks about worship? I’ll explain.

First, I chose Christian worship as my subject because it seemed a neglected child and, I suppose, out of fondness and compassion, to it I naturally went.

But wait a minute, you might interject… Worship? Neglected? You can’t be serious. For crying out loud, it comes in all shapes and sizes. Why do you think we already have the term ‘worship wars’? Good grief, man. Don’t waste my time and insult my intelligence!

I assure you; I have no desire to do either.

However, I propose that amid our constant arguements over how to worship—high vs low, liturgical vs praise, blended vs… we forget to ask why we worship and what is worship. If we get those questions wrong or fail to ask them, the 'how' is almost pointless.

But that doesn't mean the how is irrelevant. I think it's vital. And here we find another problem. For all the bickering over the previously mentioned options A or B, I think we miss the options C, D, and so on, which have been tucked away in some storage room behind the sanctuary, hidden and forgotten. I'd like us to open that door and have a look around. I believe we'll be surprised at what we see.

I’ll begin revealing the contents of the room later, but first, I promised to tell you why you can trust me. Those details will be in the next installment.

Till then,

Mark
